Article Excerpts:
"Q. What if you can't be part of the retreat planning committee?
A. If possible, get a copy of the agenda in advance. Better yet, spend some time thinking about real issues the team is facing that you would like to see addressed, said Helen Cooke, founder of the Cooke Consulting Group, an executive coaching and team development firm in Haddon Heights, N.J.
Ms. Cooke says your guard should be up if you know that the managers attending are hypersensitive to criticism or will be looking to use personal revelations against you."
"Q. What if you register your dissent and the agenda doesn't change?
A. Once you have voiced your opinion, participate dutifully, and with as much enthusiasm as you can muster. Making a scene of your frustration or showing only half-hearted interest will be remembered far more than the mediocrity of the event itself, Ms. Cooke said. 'Sulking in the corner is never a good option,' she said. 'It can hurt how you're viewed in the organization. It's one thing to have a team-building event that is ineffectual. It's another to damage your career because of how you've responded to it.'"
